I use one of these to light up my garage when I open the door to get out of the house. That is the difference. The light stays on long enough for me to walk down the steps and go to my car or get something from the freezer that I keep there. Of course when I'm there longer I turn on the regular lights, but often it's a quick visit for something or a ride in and out of the car so it's great to have these temporary lights. The battery lasts several months, and when fully discharged it takes several hours to recharge (at least when plugged into my computer - maybe less when plugged into an outlet), but then it delivers good bright light as you go. need for a long time. use a different ledge for my pantry and appreciate it for dark closet niches too. They reliably light up when motion is detected and stay on for a decent amount of time, but not long enough to unnecessarily drain the battery. The light stays on as long as motion is detected (otherwise dark), but only about 30 seconds after motion has disappeared. I can use the switch to turn the light off completely or leave it on as long as I like, but I use the motion detection setting to make it work automatically. Because the strips stick to magnetic strips that you stick to the back of the tape, you can easily remove the flashlight to charge and replace when needed. Very useful and durable item.
