Review on πŸ“ SE 785BC Solid Brass Caliper by Kenneth Murphy

Handy little calipers

This is a nice little caliper. I ordered three and expected them to arrive on the 17th. They arrived on the 11th which is nice. Each was wrapped in a sealed plastic wrap. The top edge measures 4 inches to the nearest 16 inches, the bottom edge measures 100 millimeters to the millimeter. The action from the wrap is a bit tight, and in one instance the thumb rest snags when pulled past the measuring faces of the jaws. The edges were very sharp and irritated the hand after using the caliper for a long time. So far this caliper is very similar to those you can find at a similarly priced home center. The features that make this little caliper shine for me are two. First, the scale isn't a tape glued to metal, it's engraved in brass. This is a much better way of placing the scale on the instrument. Second, the millimeter scale is equipped with a vernier scale, which ensures measurement accuracy with an accuracy of 0.1 millimeters. I have not seen this feature on any other small brass caliper. I corrected the instrument's shortcomings by rounding the edges my hand touched and smoothing the back of the slide with a thin whetstone, leaving the measuring faces alone. Then I polished the whole thing twice with toothpaste and an old toothbrush. I then worked on the slide until it ran smoothly. Then I gave the finishing touches with brass polish. I now have three fine-tuned and easy-to-use tools.
