We bought this to put under our above ground pool. First we put in the tarp, then the foam mat, textured side up, then the pool. We left a wider border along the side where we enter and exit the water. So far I've been able to hose it down and sweep it up to keep the pieces from falling apart. It protects the foil from the ground and creates a pleasant cushioning on the pool floor. The only real issue I have with the product is that the squares are a bit smaller and thinner than I expected and the border pieces just don't match up at the edge, we couldn't line the ends together so we gave up.
