Having worked in the auto repair industry for almost 20 years I have found that the most neglected vehicles are the ones I own/drive regularly. I have 4 cars that I've done everything I can in the maintenance to extend the intervals by installing long life synthetic oil, heavy duty oil filters and over time a washable air filter. I've never noticed a noticeable increase in performance or fuel efficiency in the last 10 years and 12 cars I've installed them in. What I have noticed is much more consistent fuel consumption and some long term money savings. I change my oil between 10,000 and 15,000 miles and since I've been there I've changed the air filter at the same time because if I didn't and I needed it it would take forever to come back to replace it. Now when I take the time to service the oil, I clean the air filter and it's all done in one session. This will not cause problems with the mass air flow sensors or other sensors if you follow the instructions, but too much oil on the filter will cause problems.
