Tether works reasonably well and the spring is springy but almost impossible to use in an old house with big paneling and/or shorter doors. The trim over some of my doors is about 5.5 inches high and the clamp isn't big enough to span that distance. It only works on doors with a smaller 4" panel. The claim that it can't be used in doors taller than 7 feet (84 inches) is ridiculous. My doors are standard 80 inches; and with a 20 pound kid I had to adjust the strap an inch from its shortest position. There was at least a foot of excess length. For a heavier child, it could only be used with a door opening MORE THAN 7ft, possibly up to 8ft.
