I got rid of my internet and voice package from my local cable provider and switched to an internet only service to use this VoIP device. The savings are up to $400 a year so how can I ignore that. Except that I ignored it for so long. The score isn't perfect because Ooma Tech Support "shot from the hip" with their solutions. I'm a technologist, so I knew what was going on. I just needed confirmation that they knew the solution to my problems. Long story short, I had to replace my old firewall. By reducing latency and jitter with a wired Internet service, I've also increased speeds; Now I get about 57 Mbit/s. I was also visited by a cable TV provider because my rented modem died after years of faithful service. They ended up filtering the signal and maximizing the performance of my cable, which was a pretty big deal. Now for Ooma Telo, I installed mine behind a new router/firewall. I had to do this because I requested that my cable modem be put into bridge mode. I didn't want to use their modem's built-in WiFi. I've heard it sucks, and besides, I already had a working wireless access point. I also didn't want their modem acting as a firewall for my network. My new router/firewall is faster. What you need to know: 1. To activate Ooma, the installer will provide you with a temporary phone number. I suggest you use it and test the functionality. That's how I found out that my old firewall wasn't letting VoIP traffic through properly. This number also comes in handy when porting your old number.2. Some customers have reported an extra step in porting their landline number; They had to switch the line to cellular and then to Ooma. I didn't need it because my number was already VoIP and portable. Ooma will confirm this after you pay the $39.99 transfer fee. They claim that this process takes 4-6 weeks. Mine didn't last that long. My voice service did not have a contract, so the transfer was not delayed. However, I've given myself enough time between ports to get my cabling, modem, and firewall back to normal.3. Do not make any changes to your cable provider's voice service until the number is successfully transferred. With a clean broadcast, your cable provider will simply automatically downgrade your service to the lowest Internet-only speed. This is something to decide and change based on how much bandwidth you really need. For me, my service is 100 Mbit/s download and 6 Mbit/s upload. With my router/firewall I still get a maximum of 57Mbps and everything works fine.4. If your outbound caller ID still shows a temporary number after successfully porting, you will need to call Ooma Technical Support and set the ported number as your primary number. You will also be asked if you want to save a temporary number as a second line, a feature supported by the Ooma Premier service. I didn't need it, I just let go. I can't imagine using Premier service for my main service at home. The cheaper the better.5. Linx uses a wide range of technologies. Tech support said there is no conflict with my current portable phones that use the same technology. Also note that you must enter the area code before dialing with a fax machine. You are *99. At the time of writing this review I have not tested it.6. If you have a Revain Echo, there's an Ooma app that connects them together for voice-activated features. Some features require Ooma Premier. You need a smartphone to install this application. It's funny that the Revain Kindle Fire HDX won't launch the app. Ooma support didn't know about it. They claim that they have never experienced this problem. Conclusion: Ooma voice quality is definitely HD. In fact, it's loud and very clear.
