I have three of these devices at home and could add a few more. They do double duty as temperature sensors for my thermostat and motion detection for occupancy detection. Powering on in OpenHAB is very similar to powering on any other battery powered Z-Wave device. Make sure it stays active until configuration is complete (a long press on the inner button will do this for you). OpenHAB will generate the XML when your mount has completed successfully. All three devices I have work well with the OpenHAB Z-Wave binding and provide reliable reports. They also don't consume a lot of battery and run for over a year. There is an adjustable sensitivity which can be useful if you have pets. I had to set the sensitivity below the maximum (range 0-11) to avoid my 60 lb dog being spotted. I don't know how accurate they are in terms of temperature or lux, but the units I have at least agree with each other.
