Bear Fence Installation: Building Materials

I bought this for a trip to Alaska to use as a portable bear fence. I used this device as well as some twisted pair electrical cords and screw-in plastic rope hangers. I bought rope and hangers at a local farm store. The plastic brackets worked well for attaching to the trees around the camp. We installed them 5 days and nights in a row and only turned them off when entering or exiting the warehouse. No battery life issues and the device held up well during our 11-mile round-trip hike. I checked the fence every day to make sure the rope was intact and gave a little nudge. Enough juice to make you jump, but not terrible. This would likely cause the bear to step back and rethink, although I'm not sure as we don't think we tried testing it. Our fenced storage area was probably 800 feet of rope. We knitted two threads with a square of about 30x30. I used a yellow crocodile skin clip to direct the sap from the device to the fence rope, although you can hang the device from the rope if you'd like. Since we had a "door" area that we created with Nite Ize's pivoting cable tie, we didn't want the weight of the device to be on the guard when tightening or removing it. I attached a grounded alligator clip to a small metal rod (not included) which I just stuck into the ground. Gloves).
