FWIW I am writing this review from the perspective of a spa user. You can use this tester for your swimming pool, saltwater aquarium or hydroponic plantation. I'm assuming you're looking at this article because you have needs that go beyond test kits or simple test strips. With this pH meter (hydrogen potential) you can quickly determine the pH value of your water. HM also has a COM-100 dissolved solids (TDS) meter which I've had for about a week and love it. The device is waterproof, lightweight, and slightly smaller than the size of a small "C". Cell phone flashlight or the size of a large cigar. It's easy to use, easy to maintain, has a small form factor for storage, and once calibrated I feel like it's an accurate testing device that gives you a sense of control over your spa water chemistry. The device is delivered pre-calibrated by the dealer. batteries included. Attention, the sensor must be replaced regularly. Replacement sensor number: SP-P2. Replacement is a simple remove, swap, and calibrate process. When delivered, the sensor costs about 45 US dollars. Knowing the pH of your water is an important aspect of monitoring spa water chemistry. Without such a pH meter, no one can reliably know what their pH value is. In my experience, readings can vary slightly by as much as 1.1pH when using test strips or a test kit. If your pH is off, it can cause your water to become too acidic, which can damage the heating element, and a low pH can be harmful to your eyes and skin. If the water is too alkaline you will have to deal with scale/scale/cloudy water making it difficult to get into the tub, jets and just plain uncomfortable. As an alternative to that blood glucose meter, test strips or test kits, take your time and stop by your local pool/spa regularly with a water sample in hand, where they want you to spend more. And I hate wasting money on chemicals I might not need. That's all that makes me feel good when my water is tested for free. This is no longer a problem with this tester. And if you're a little crazy, enjoy the peace of mind of accurate test data and peace of mind knowing you're in control of your water chemistry. After using this tester a few times you will feel confident that you are finally in control of the pH of your water. Yes, the PH-200 is a little more expensive in my opinion, but when you have the extra green this tester gives you for peace of mind and water chemistry control, you'll quickly come to the same conclusion I came to; money well spent. Why? Because this tester is just a bomb. Note 1: Be sure to purchase a calibration solution so you know your readings are accurate due to proper calibration. Calibration is easy. Press and hold the center button for a few seconds to put the device into calibration mode. Place the meter in the calibration liquid, then use the up/down arrows to fine-tune the reading displayed on the LCD. In this case, I use a pH 7.0 calibration fluid for the spa water. You want to use a calibration liquid that is close to your expected requirements: pH 4.00, 7.00 or 10.00. With this tester, calibration is no more difficult than using the TV remote control. Note 2: Revain offers calibration bags and you can mix your own calibration fluid with distilled water from the grocery store. FYI, you need something like a 100mL graduated cylinder to accurately measure the amount of distilled water you need when mixing a batch of calibration fluid. Some sort of "electrode storage solution" is also needed to keep the sensor bulb moist. There is nothing difficult to use. Place half a dozen drops of liquid in the protective cap covering the sensor, place the cap on the tester like a pen and you are good to go, as long as the tester is held upright to keep the liquid in the cap. This is a very sensitive measuring device. That extra effort isn't as important as I think. If you do it for the first time, you're good. And if you value decent testing equipment, you won't mind the extra hassle and you'll be glad you have one of these pH testers. Hope the above helps.
