It took me longer to pull the harness through the harness than it did for our 34 lb dog to wriggle out when we tried the medium harness but the small fits her fine . She prefers to sit in the back seat than in a box and seems comfortable with it. I'm calm because she's where she needs to be. Our previous dog managed to crawl under the passenger seat on a short trip to the vet, so we now like to keep our dogs in place on even the shortest trips! This harness is well padded so I think it will stay safe even if we have to tear it up a lot. If your dog is on the border between the two recommended sizes, consider their body type. My sister-in-law's bulldog will probably need a medium, but our Catalula doesn't have enough upper body weight (yet) to keep the medium in place. Even the small size gives it some room to fit the shortest straps.
