Review on Philips PET724 7 Inch Portable Player by Sri Mims

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Nice little player

This is my third DivX DVD player. I have a full size Philips and also a Samsung and now this. This one is fast becoming my favourite. So far it's played all the DivX videos I've thrown at it, as well as recorded DVDs. It plays DivX videos, which my Samsung can't. This device is lightweight, easy to use, has an attractive design, and the buttons on the player itself are quite simple. I like it. The picture quality on screen is MUCH better than other DivX capable portable DVD players I've looked at. That. Luckily, you can upgrade with an Energizer DVDmax battery, which will give you an additional 8 hours of use. But at $70 for one of these, I found it prohibitively expensive. The only thing that bothers me is that the volume of the built-in speaker is rather weak. Haven't tried it with headphones yet, but plan on using it most of the time. I've read in other reviews that the volume of both headphone jacks is also weak, especially when you're on a noisy plane. So I bought a Boostaroo headphone volume amplifier which I hope to use to solve this problem. I've read that some other players still play sound through the built-in speakers even with headphones plugged in, but this is NOT the case with this unit. The built-in speakers are (as they should be) muted when you plug in your headphones. An annoyance (but that's my problem): I often accidentally hold the remote upside down because its shape is perfectly symmetrical. I can't tell where "up" is unless I stop and read the word "Philips" written on the console. Also, the remote control buttons are difficult to read, especially in low light. These are REALLY minor complaints.

Pros
  • Nice to use
Cons
  • old
