This is a reasonably priced gauge, but it's actually a little more durable than I expected for the price, and pretty accurate to me. To check the calibration, I measured out 50mL of water and 5.00 grams of sugar to make a 5/55 or 9.1% by weight solution. The meter reads 9.2% for this solution (after adjusting the zero offset +0.2% for pure water). I'm satisfied as the exact grades on the scale differ by 0.2% so can't expect more. There is an offset adjustment screw, but to be careful, always check the zero offset anyway. I had fun helping my kid measure the sugar content of different apple juices for a science fair project. We also tested Kearn's Nectar, which contains an insane amount of sugar. If you don't believe me, try it and see.
