Considering the success others have described in reviving older laptops, I was disappointed to find myself on the Sony VAIO VGN-A197VP 2005 could not boot from it . The computer recognized the drive perfectly since I could install an operating system on it, mount it and view files etc., but it kept getting a black screen and a blinking cursor on boot. If I set the MBR to always prompt, I see MBR 1234 on boot: but none of the partitions actually boot. The BIOS also recognizes the drive well, but there's something about the drive that the BIOS doesn't seem to appreciate. Went back to the original hard drive, erased it and did the same install process and everything is fine, so it looks like it's a compatibility issue.
