I have made more than 35 beads mainly from softwoods such as oriental red cedar, white pine and yellow pine. So far I haven't broken a single drill. I use an inexpensive Craftsman drill press and set it to as close to the recommended 1000 rpm as possible. I made beads 12mm, 20mm, 22mm and 25mm. I usually press the wood onto the drill press table, but I've made a few without clamping the wood as well. My 9 year old granddaughter probably made about 10 beads and has no problem getting perfect beads. Just make sure you work very slowly and start with softwood and you should be fine. I might try oak and hickory planks to see if I can pull it off.
