Definitely looks natural and not artificial as New Zealand claims. The darker black to beige pebbles make a stunning base for my 10 gallon beta tank. An 11 pound bag is enough to cover a 10 gallon (20 x 10 = 200 square inches) soil about 3/4 inch deep. This should be fine for plastic plants and can make cleaning easier, but I would suggest at least 2 bags for live plants. YES, it needs to be washed before use to remove dust and it takes about 20 rinse cycles in a 1-1/2 gallon bucket to clean it enough that you won't have cloudy tank water to begin with . . The size of the stone is good for plants but may be a bit small for artificially decorated aquarium. All in all, a worthwhile purchase that I recommend!
