This is a great solution for securely mounting small flat back electronics. It was designed to mount a radar on a motorcycle but I see it as a good solution for other devices in environments where other methods might be difficult. The magnets hold tight and I have no doubt the metal detector will stay in place with normal use. I've ridden it for several hundred miles and haven't bothered to put on a belt yet. However, I will do so, just for added peace of mind. Mounting to a RAM base or other AMPS template mount can be a little tricky as you are working against two powerful magnets that want to bounce off. Put a small metal object on top to make it easier. My only complaint and the reason for the docked star is that the magnets rattle inside when there's nothing on the mount. On my bike they make a lot of noise at certain RPMs. I suppose you could glue them inside, but I attached a small nut to the plate when not using RD. Very happy with this mount and the same goes for other RAM products I've used.
