"...Despite the chaos that ensued, Bruno still had Shmuel in his hand and nothing on earth would convince him to let go." The boy in the striped pajamas will always have a special place in my heart. In around 240 pages, the author gives us an impression of what it was like for German and Jewish children, Nazi soldiers and families of Nazi soldiers during the Holocaust. There are many historical fiction books dealing with the Holocaust and World War II, but not many books written from a German point of view. The story tells of a German child named Bruno who is forced to leave his home in Berlin to live in a house just outside of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Bruno meets and befriends a Jewish boy named Shmuel. My only criticism relates to the ending of the story - it's a bit unbelievable to think that a 10 year old wouldn't realize that it's not all about fun and games. on the other side of the fence. Overall, this is a great read and I look forward to reading it again in the future.
