I never read it in school but I'm glad I found the time now!

This book is so heartbreaking. I already knew the plot, but I still really enjoyed reading the book. It has many omens that can only be understood if you really pay attention. A very touching but beautifully written book. It's great for kids because there are only hints of violence and there's never any written violence or details like you see in other books. I would read that again! I probably will in a few years.

Pros
  • excellent
Cons
  • I didn't like the condition of the book. In general, all pages of the book were intact😂

The horrifying book about the Holocaust should be removed from all school curricula. My son read this book at school and I picked it up and read it after hearing mixed reviews about it. This is a terrible task for Holocaust education, and also a deeply misleading task. He takes the horrors of a concentration camp and uses them to build a story revolving around a little German boy, the son of a concentration camp commandant, and what goes wrong in his life when he befriends a little boy over a…

Pros
  • It's a sad, wonderful story. A film was also made about this story. Prepare your tissues
Cons
  • Did the author study the Holocaust at all? This book was terrible. Not recommended for children or adults

shocking reality in my review

Brunos' innocence in the face of extreme brutality. Thank you for keeping Bruno innocent to the end. That should never happen again.

Pros
  • This was bought for a school project. The book is so good.
Cons
  • The sides are cut unevenly. It looks like a defective item that they are trying to sell you at full price. Very disappointed.

😭💔😭💔😭 my rating

No book has ever made me cry more. 😭💔 I'm very sorry for everyone who had to go through this time. There is absolutely no reason or need for such hatred in this world and I cannot believe this actually happened. How can people do such terrible things to each other? My god, I'm so, so sorry. 😭💔

Pros
  • A very good book to read. After the movie.
Cons
  • Distorts the true nature of the Nazi concentration camps.

Unbelievable in my opinion

It wasn't a terrible book, just not very believable, and it suggests that people didn't know what was going on, and THAT isn't believable at all. Hatred of Jews was proclaimed everywhere.

Pros
  • The novel The Boy in the Striped Pajamas received critical acclaim and is considered a masterpiece of historical fiction.
Cons
  • Perpetuates stereotypes about Nazi Germany

Be sure to read A Children's Introduction to the Holocaust -

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is one of those books that I think most people should read at least once in their lives. The action takes place in Berlin during World War II. A boy named Bruno returns home to find his father with a "very important job" and the family is about to move to a new house. The move is unintentional and he ends up in a house near Auschwitz (which he mistakenly calls "out of home"). The story is told in the third person and the reader follows Bruno as he lives in his new

Pros
  • My son needed this book urgently for school, delivered on time, the book is in perfect condition.
Cons
  • Life in concentration camps is portrayed inaccurately.

and in the end, friendship conquers all

A touching and frightening story about a little boy named Bruno who needs a friend more than anything in the world. The events of World War II, of course, tell of despair and hope.

Pros
  • If you haven't read this yet or seen the movie, then do both! I cried!
Cons
  • Blames the victims of the Holocaust

I understand why it's fantastic

Not at all. Yes, there was a holocaust. However, Bruno's grandfather wasn't even a character. During the Holocaust he would have been sent straight to the gas chambers. If you want to write a book about the Holocaust, compile the facts.

Pros
  • Same as 2nd touch. John Boyne is a brilliant author and is about to read his second book, All the Broken Places.
Cons
  • The Nazis sent a Jewish child to his death. You were too young to work and survive this horror.

3.75 (rounded up to 4)

Given how many WWII novels I've read, I'm surprised at how long I put off this one. Until I joined the kind reading, I wasn't aware of the more problematic issues, so I took it with some skepticism. There are definitely serious problems in the book, most of which stem from Bruno's forgetfulness and lack of empathy. What annoyed me the most was the lack of correction from his family and even Shmuel. The son of a Nazi commander would not be in the dark about his father's role in the Holocaust…

Pros
  • The story is told from a child's perspective, allowing young readers to easily relate to the narrative and characters.
Cons
  • Does not adequately account for the long-term devastation caused by the Holocaust.

One of my favourites

"...Despite the chaos that ensued, Bruno still had Shmuel in his hand and nothing on earth would convince him to let go." The boy in the striped pajamas will always have a special place in my heart. In around 240 pages, the author gives us an impression of what it was like for German and Jewish children, Nazi soldiers and families of Nazi soldiers during the Holocaust. There are many historical fiction books dealing with the Holocaust and World War II, but not many books written from a German…

Pros
  • good for reading
Cons
  • The Holocaust serves as the setting for a fictional story.

That left me speechless.

As with all of John Boyne's books, it took me time after reading to process what I read. As if each of his books deserved a moment of silence. Written from the point of view of a child who clearly doesn't understand the depravity that surrounds him and the utter devastation of the spirit he lives with next door, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas offers a touching look at innocence among children before it is given to them were taught to hate. It is this innocence of spirit that ultimately…

Pros
  • The book offers readers a valuable lesson on the importance of empathy, kindness and understanding in the face of hate and intolerance.
Cons
  • Minimizes the trauma of the Holocaust

Great book review from me.

This is an excellent book. He also has a movie, so if you've read it, watch the movie later. I bought it to force myself to start reading again.

Pros
  • Boyne conveys the innocence of youth and the horrors of hell. It was fascinating and exciting - I couldn't put it down.
Cons
  • Erases the suffering of real people

Spoilers*** - my new review

This was one of the best books I've read in a long time. I'm 13 years old and I like to read books like Jupiter Orbit, Red Queen and DAS war so good <3

Pros
  • Bought for my 12 year old granddaughter. We read and discussed it together. TERRIFIC!!!!
Cons
  • Promotes Holocaust denial

Revainrating 5 out of 5

I don't think 9-year-old Bruno was portrayed as too naive.

You can't compare the naivety of a nine-year-old in 1945 to today's seemingly mundane nine-year-olds, who are confronted with adult language, content and objects on television, social media and heartless adults who don't care much about children, who delight in innocence. Childhood. But are most nine-year-olds that peaceful these days? Most nine-year-olds are naturally naïve, even when they have to study adult stuff. Most children become confused and anxious, undemanding, understanding, and…

Pros
  • The novel has been translated into more than 30 languages and has received international acclaim, making it a truly universal story that appeals to readers from different cultures and generations.
Cons
  • Can't really understand the history of WWII

Holocaust in reality!: my review

Well written historical novel. When soldiers and Jews come together, lessons are learned. I find this book heartbreaking. A middle school-age grown child can handle this book. If not, wait until they transfer to high school. A way to learn about the Holocaust.

Pros
  • My son loved it and couldn't wait to read it. He's 12 in 6th grade
Cons
  • It fails to accurately portray the danger of the Nazi ideology.

Very good! - My review

A sweet but heartbreaking short story. It was well written and caught my attention. There were good characters and some I didn't really like.

Pros
  • Best book but sad
Cons
  • The 12-year-old said it was written for young children. Dropped it. The language is simple. Probably a good book for young readers.

Good quality in my opinion

Buying books online is difficult, sometimes we get used books when they are listed as new. The book is new, well packaged and of good quality.

Pros
  • I liked the book, but the ending is sad.
Cons
  • Presents the Holocaust as entertainment

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Very sad last comment.

This book is about a boy named Bruno who is 9 years old and his journey/experience moving abroad. Bruno's father is a very important person because he runs one of the Jewish concentration camps. The Jews are very thin and covered in dirt, it looks like they are wearing striped pajamas. The reason they moved in the first place is because his dad's boss name is "Fury". Bruno wants to explore the fence but isn't allowed to, even though he wants to be an explorer later, so he does it anyway. . As…

Pros
  • How do I fill it in with the few things I have to say about this book, was it good? There
Cons
  • Romanticizes Nazism

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Deep and heartbreaking

This story about the Holocaust is profound, amazing and heartbreaking; it reminds me a bit of the movies La Vita è Bella (Life is Beautiful) and Jojo Rabbit. It tells the story of 9-year-old Bruno, who cannot understand why his family has moved from their beautiful home in Berlin to a smaller house much further away due to his father's important work for Germany. Alone from his friends at home, he becomes curious about the people in "striped pajamas" he sees behind the fence from his new…

Pros
  • The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is a highly emotional and thought-provoking book that readers will remember long after they have read it.
Cons
  • Reduces Nazi guilt

nazi germany - my new review

I'm an adult and never read this book as a kid, but after moving to Germany I felt it was a good place to start. Actually, I would have expected this book to be even more emotional. It's too easy to think of children reading this book who don't really understand the horrors that happened. I'm glad I read it, but I definitely think it should be read, explained and evaluated more often in US schools. Because I didn't read it in school and I know it would have influenced me more when I was a kid…

Pros
  • This is a MUST READ. Things should NEVER be forgotten. Thank you for this book.
Cons
  • Glorifies the story of the "innocent bystander".
