Review on πŸ‘• John Boyne Boys' Striped Pajamas for Boys' Clothing by Michael Barrett

A chilling Holocaust book focusing on the trauma of a young Nazi child

The horrifying book about the Holocaust should be removed from all school curricula. My son read this book at school and I picked it up and read it after hearing mixed reviews about it. This is a terrible task for Holocaust education, and also a deeply misleading task. He takes the horrors of a concentration camp and uses them to build a story revolving around a little German boy, the son of a concentration camp commandant, and what goes wrong in his life when he befriends a little boy over a fence , without having the slightest idea about it. Depiction of the atrocities inside. It is deeply unrealistic and oversimplifies the deep horror of the Holocaust, using it as a stage costume for an incredibly ignorant little German boy and creating a false equivalence of trauma for the undemanding reader. Look for coverage of it (because I'm not allowed to link to it here) - it's heavily scolded by Holocaust educators, but it was the first work on the Holocaust that many children read.

Cons
  • Did the author study the Holocaust at all? This book was terrible. Not recommended for children or adults
