I recently started wet shaving this year and have been using the Van Der Hagen blades that came with the safety razor but there are only 5 of them so I looked for a box of good quality blades and they seem to be the best deal you can get. Among several other brands, Astras seem to be among the best in terms of quality and sharpness, and are said to be right in between Personas and Feathers, so I figured they were the best mid-range for beginner wet razors. A slim box that doesn't take up much space and has a perforated opening from which you can pull out a small box of 5 blades at a time. When viewed, they are almost the same as Van Der Hagens. The same size, no flaws, and the logo and lettering are beautifully printed. However, I immediately noticed that these Astra blades have a much smaller cutting edge than Van Der Hagen. By that I mean the actual shaving area that is shaped and sharpened on the machine, so I was wondering if this shave would feel any different. There is actually a difference between the two blades, so I'm wondering if that's the reason. I've found these Astras to feel less aggressive than Van Der Hagens and in some places can take an extra pass or so to bring the grit up to the level Van Der Hagens typically do. Personally, I prefer the more aggressive feel of the Van Der Hagens because I get a better feel for the blade cutting into my skin, to understand how hard I'm cutting hair and how smooth my skin is getting. However, I don't have sensitive skin, so most people would probably prefer less aggressive blades. Luckily, with these Astra blades, the end result is exactly the same - a very close and comfortable shave. I'm a little surprised at how sharp these blades are, as people say Van Der Hagens would be more aggressive (however since I'm new to all these blades aggressiveness may not be sharpness but rather dullness). With Astras I end up with fewer cuts on bumps or pimples and fewer red marks. Since they don't seem to have that much cutting power, I may need to do an extra pass or a different angle to get all of the grit in certain areas. However, if I tried Van Der Hagens, I would cut almost all of them once. time, so I prefer them for a "safer" shave. I shave 3 to 4 times with a blade, but that most likely depends on how much facial hair you have and personal preference. I also like that the blade has numbers (1 and 2 on one side, 3 and 4 on the other) so you always know which side is which for those who like to turn the blade over after every shave. I will include photos of the packaging, the blade itself and a comparison to a Van Der Hagen blade. Since the blade pack does not include a used blade dispenser, I used an old plastic gum container that I enhanced with a knife for a safe, quiet, and cheap way to store used blades. While I love the feel of Van Der Hagen blades and will probably experiment with other blades in the future, I really like these Astra blades because I get a very close shave every time and rarely get cuts and when I do they are a lot smaller . than I get with Van Der Hagens. Not to mention that Van Der Hagens has a ridiculous price per blade compared to 100 Astra blades you can get for around 10 cents each! Overall I think these are the highest quality blades you can get for the price and they go very well with a Van Der Hagen Butterfly Razor rather than their overpriced and more aggressive blades, especially if you are new to it as its first double are. extreme razor.
