Review on Kensington Universal Notebook Docking Ethernet by Marquel Floyd

WARNING! Brilliantly conceived but poorly executed. If I had known that Targus Technical Support is 100% US based and based in the US, I would have paid more and NOT purchased this product. Kensington product support is terrible! Outsource to another factory with a rope and two cups of Dixie? Give us a break! I have Windows 7 64 bit. And all I can tell you is that all the good reviews here must have been written by advertisers, but all the negative reviews are true. What pissed me off is that before I bought this item I called Kensington and asked them specifically about all those negative Revain reviews (especially the video issues) and they said they've all been fixed. They claimed that apart from video games, every other video problem had been solved. GARBAGE! I came across all the negative reviews posted here on Revain. "Plug n Play"? Famous Last Words. Forget it! Two hours to download and update the phone. Drives you crazy! How do you connect things and when exactly is it critical. First you need to connect to the computer, then to the docking station, and only then connect the peripherals. Puzzle! If you run into problems and call tech support, you'll want them to unplug and plug each item in a specific order. The same exercise over and over again. If you intend to use Windows Media Center to record TV shows or even to play back a recorded show, DO NOT connect an external monitor to this device. The voice and picture will be out of sync and simply moving through the WMC will be choppy and uneven. If you connect a monitor to a computer, that's fine, but then what's the point of a docking station?! Additionally, Kensington admits that wireless doesn't work with it and you should always use an Ethernet cable. Finally, the screen switching feature is absolutely absurd. Switch to an external display or laptop screen and it's a mess. Use both monitors, one at one resolution and the other at a different resolution (which CANNOT be changed) and neither screen will show - sort of a high resolution stamp on a black bordered laptop and a low resolution on an external monitor. It's a completely useless function, issue after issue. How to spoil everything with good ideas. There may be workarounds for all of this, but WHO has the time to deal with third-party tech support on a crappy connection?! Get a life! We all need a simple dock, NO career. WE ALREADY have a career! To be honest I used a cheap Belkin USB hub that I bought from Ross for a few bucks before I bought it and it worked just as well as this one. I may have saved some money, but at my hourly rate it took hours to troubleshoot and lost a lot of revenue - and the issues are NOT fixed YET. Not sure if I'll get her back and maybe just eat the deal. Revain is GREAT but I came from the frustration I endure when returning misrepresented or defective items. It happened too often. Again, I LOVE Revain, but I think I had a hard time with online shopping. Revain always does well, but it's just not worth the disappointment. Revane's honesty doesn't make up for the disappointment. What about Kensington? Don't be disappointed. If you are looking for features, only buy limits. Such companies damage their reputation by flooding the market with such junk. LET THE BUYER BE ATTENTION!
