I have plantar fasciitis and back issues (the latter of which causes frequent numbness in my left toes), and even tightening/tying my shoes can aggravate the numbness, so I’m very picky about shoes. These Keen shoes, though, are the most comfortable shoes I own. That comfort is in part because the toe box is very large/wide. The rest of the shoe seems proportioned normally, but my toes have tons of room. The overall shoe has plenty of padding; even the inserts are better than most, though I still replaced them with Superfeet inserts.I took these shoes on a weeklong trip to the East Coast for a college tour trip: five states, 18 colleges, so lots of walking. They were great: I felt confident that I could walk anywhere I need to go. I took two pairs of shoes (a pair of Merrells was the other), but I ended up wearing the Keens 90 percent of the time. The only time since that I’ve had any discomfort was when I was driving a manual-transmission car in traffic (repeatedly pushing in the clutch), but that’s an extreme case. The shoes are very easy to tighten and tie: You don’t have to pull on the laces mid-shoe and then move up; you just pull on the ends. The laces don’t get stuck. However, they do become untied easily, so if I’m going to be wearing them for a while, I double-tie them. Untying the double-tie isn’t difficult; you don’t have to use your fingernails, so I’m okay with that.I would not say that they are the most attractive shoes—the big toe box makes them look a little like clown shoes—but the amazing comfort totally makes that unimportant to me.
