We bought this carbon monoxide monitor because we are renovating an old house and the outdated equipment has not yet been replaced. The monitor arrived on time and it was easy to install a backup battery. After reading other reviews I checked the date on our device and it was only a few months old. Because the device does not alarm for readings below 35ppm, there is a button you can press to see if lower readings have been detected. Also for us when we tested this function it always showed as "0" too. We finally asked ourselves: does this device even work?! Well we found a way to test it and in fact the block works very well. My husband drove the unit into the garage and then drove our car into the garage, turned off the engine and closed the door. He waited a minute or less and the device actually detected a small amount of CO (15ppm - see image). Since it was below 35ppm, the device didn't raise an alarm, but at least we now know it's actually working. I would never advise you to test the device by running the car in a closed garage. We simply measured the smoke from the engine as if you had come home, parked and turned off the car, got out and closed the garage door. We are very pleased with the way the Kiddie Nighthawk CO Alarm works and are delighted to have it in our home - great security provided by a great product which we would have no hesitation in recommending.
