In my opinion, the easiest way to describe a camera's functional success is to understand its use and experience as a photographer. So, first of all, I would like to mention that I am a part-time professional photographer. I mainly photograph weddings, but I also do portraits and wildlife photography. I have a full time job and enjoy photography in my free time as a source of creative expression as well as a bonus salary. Now to the camera. This is the third Nikon DSLR I own. Despite doubts from friends and family, the D70 got me into the digital world early on. I then upgraded to the D80 while in college as it was a nice upgrade but affordable for a college student with serious photography aspirations. When I first got serious about wedding photography a few months ago, I spent weeks reading Revain reviews for a Nikon DSLR. I finally settled on D300s and am glad I did. i love the camera It's fast, easy to use, and offers lots of personalization features to suit my needs. This personalization is by far the biggest plus of the camera. By setting the camera for fast bracketing, I don't have to worry about exposure or wedding details when capturing the moment. The command dials allow you to quickly switch between priority modes, as well as control aperture and shutter in manual mode. The body feels secure in my hands and the weight is very manageable. Nikon also has credit for the battery design, as I can record an entire wedding (6+ hours) with only half the battery, so I don't have to worry about multiple backups. SD, while the D300s mainly records in CF, and my choice of SD cards was already quite large. The ability to save files to SD as a CF image backup is a great tool, although most of the time I use an SD card to capture any type of video. The video itself is a nice bonus, but by no means should this be treated as a standalone video camera. Focusing is manual and exposure control can be difficult. It records good videos in 720p, but there are better cameras for videos. Overall - it was a fantastic purchase and I've enjoyed using it and have no plans to update any time soon. I highly recommend this camera.
