It took me a while to figure out how it works. All Ahle videos have a built-in thread spool. However, if you search "jerking needle awl" on YouTube, the first video describes very well how to use this needle. After watching the video I tested it on a piece of nylon fabric and found the stitch to be very strong even for those with no sewing experience. I used it to fix the edges of the canvas on my pop up trailer. Over the years, the tarpaulin has torn at the attachment points on the corners of the bed. This tool worked great for this use.
