I bought a used T440p which I noticed had a high CPU fan frequency, especially when scrolling up and down in Safari. A lot of thermal paste was applied to the CPU and heat spreader and it looked fine, but I wiped it off, didn't apply any special thermal paste and put it back. No changes; The fan turned on at the same frequency as before. After doing a little research online, I found this and another thermal paste with an almost cult following. I simply replaced the thermal paste with this MX-4 and started the computer as usual. I haven't measured temperatures, run benchmarks or anything like that, but the fan kicks on less often, especially at high speeds. I can still hear the fan turning on occasionally, but not often enough to bother me when I'm working in a quiet room. The difference may not be as drastic as some make out in their reviews, but it is noticeable. For me, the previous situation was just above the slight stimulus threshold, so the benefit was worth it.
