tl; dr metal vs plastic. one-time purchase.

tl; drmetal or plastic. Buy once instead of having to buy another one at some point. Fewer scratches on the blade. Less wear and tear on the KitchenAid motor. After 8 years the plastic on top started to tear. KitchenAid didn't have a product like it 8 years ago, but now they have, which is why I chose it. Advantages: 1) Made of metal, not plastic. Enough said. Yes, it took over 8 years for my mixer blade to crack, but this KitchenAid Flex Edge Mixer should last a lifetime. 2) There is a silicone scraper on one side only. This has both a plus and a minus. Pro: KitchenAid designed this for use with their machines. The presence of silicone scrapers on both sides reduces the time required for mixing, but also increases the load on the engine. I've used both and the difference in the time it takes to mix is less than 30 seconds. 3) There are no crossbars to clean as they are made of metal. required, you'll spend far less time cleaning your blade with KitchenAid. 4) Use of the KitchenAid Flex Edge will not void your warranty. knowing you did, but need to repair/replace your expensive KitchenAid. KitchenAid states that using non-KitchenAid cleaning blades increases engine wear. Cons: 1) The silicone scraper is only on one side. Mixing with the KitchenAid Flex Edge Mixer takes a few seconds longer than with the mixing blade. I've used both and the difference in the time it takes to mix is <30 seconds if that's the case. 2) KitchenAid costs $5 more. As of November 2017, the Kitchenaid costs $29.99 compared to $24.99 for the Beater Blade.
