Revainrating 4 out of 5

With effort and forgiveness a beautiful sight

If you buy this as the cheapest option for your gaming console, you'll likely be pleased with the pretty colors and impressive form factor. But you should be aware that you might need to put in a lot of work to get at least a decent picture, and even then there might be issues you can't fix. Out of the box, the colors of this display were predominantly yellow (and no, the eye protection mode is not activated). Without any color calibration feature built into the hardware, I had to rely on Windows color calibration to fix this problem. After reducing the greens by about a third and the reds a little less, I achieved color balance. However, the reds aren't as saturated as they could be, but that doesn't bother me. Once balanced, the colors look really great, and I found myself finding colorful music videos to watch just to admire the bright, vibrant area of the display. This brings us to the dynamic range between how bright and how dark a monitor can be. This is a classic limitation of IPS monitors, and while pricier models can compensate for this limitation in different ways, this frugal model easily puts up with it. Again, there are no real brightness or contrast settings built into the display. The brightness setting, as far as I can tell, only adjusts the output of the LED backlights, while the contrast changes the difference between light and dark of these lights. Once again, we're left with Windows Color Calibration, which simply gives us a slider to adjust the gamma. Unfortunately, setting the ideal gamma for sRGB Color Light Output to around 2.2-2.4 (roughly what it was out of the box) simply doesn't work, although it produces the best colors on this monitor. The problem is that the screen just can't reproduce enough dark tones and large parts of the screen are blacked out. Bright videos might be fine, but gaming isn't an option as entering even a slightly darkened environment makes viewing impossible. In order to get the game running without any notable drawbacks, I had to lower the gamma to around 1.4 (lower gamma means a brighter screen) just to make it easier to navigate in low light. The end result is that the overall display is a bit washed out and colors aren't as vivid as they could be, but I've achieved a balance that I'm happy with. Half a star monitor for my rating is that after 10 days of owning this monitor I found a stuck pixel. Right now I have a blue dot on my monitor all the time. There are a few home remedies I can try but it may result in having to live with it or having trouble getting the whole monitor back. For reference, I'm using a generic PnP display driver. . When I get my new computer I'll download the manufacturer's driver and update this review if that helps. In summary, the colors and overall picture quality are really, really good for such a cheap monitor, as long as you're willing to take the time to calibrate everything properly. It's not a monitor in the long run, but for now it seems like a great option until I'm ready to invest in a more serious gaming display. I was ready to order a second one for my dual monitor setup, but that stuck pixel made me put it off for now. Simply put, if you can put in the work and overlook some of the downsides, you can have a lot of fun with this monitor, at least until you're ready to settle for the safer, longer-term option. Incidentally, a note for the age of virtual interactions: the bezel of this monitor is so narrow that my Logitech c920 webcam actually covers part of the screen from above.
