My 90 gallon freshwater aquarium dates back to the days when the typical light source was a simple fixture with a fluorescent bulb. This system died many years ago and I was amazed at how much the technology has changed. I got the Relassy aquarium lamp as a gift. The purpose of the project is clearly to provide the different frequencies of light needed to grow corals in a saltwater tank. So for a freshwater tank, which I'd rather not grow algae in, it's overkill. For even illumination, I use both of the supplied light strips. They are certainly bright enough, even on the lowest settings, and there are no shadows other than the various caves where the cichlids hide. I don't use the timer functions because I prefer to switch the light on and then off again when observing fish so as not to encourage algae growth. The specs say it uses 4 AAA batteries. This information only applies to the remote control. The lamps connect to a wall outlet via a power cord that branches into each panel. It also states that these are three channels, but imply three options implemented by two channels. There are only two channels on the remote control. In general, I'm happy with such a gift, but for a freshwater aquarium it's too much.
