We bought this to put in a pantry we were working on and wanted light inside. We didn't need a switch outside the door or inside as it was a small storage room. Since we were working with the wiring it was easy to add an extra socket in the ceiling. Instead of a light, we plugged it into a single outlet at the top of the pantry as we wanted to use the LED strip that illuminates the inside of the door frame to illuminate the entire pantry, not just the upstairs bulb. Most of these light strips come with a transformer and are not intended to be plugged in directly. It works the way we planned it to, but one thing I don't like is that it has a delay of about two seconds when you open the door before the light comes on and about two seconds when you open it shut down. It doesn't matter, I've only seen others fire as soon as the contacts on the reed switch activate, and I'm not sure why this one has delays. I think the instructions also say that it automatically turns the light off after 15 or 30 minutes as it wasn't available at the time. We left the pantry door open for 45 minutes the other day and it never shut off.
