They grip the bit shanks very tightly. Almost too much. This is fine with my large diameter record lifter bits as you can easily pick them up and unscrew them from the holders, but small diameter bits (like 1/4" straight) are very difficult to remove. Since my trays are in the box and the bits don't fall to the ground I now only use these sockets for the big bits, the small ones sit right in the holes of the shell and are spaced far enough apart that they don't hit each other when the Box moves, it doesn't matter if they tilt a little.
