Review on πŸͺ’ Preserve PRE-5091P2 Triple Razor Replacement Blade44; 4-Pack - Bundle of Two Packs by Dnasty Julius

Revainrating 5 out of 5

As effective as Gillette Sensor Excel blades and compatible with this pen (5/5 green stars).

When I ran out of a pack of Gillette Sensor Excel blades I decided to give Preserve a try. Not because Gillette blades are bad, but because I'm not crazy about this company. They are developing increasingly complex products that often require more materials for ridiculously complex razor heads. Plus, its parent company, P&G, still tests on animals. So I switched to Preserve thinking if they were about the same quality as Gillette blades I'd be happy. So far so good - after two weeks my first blade showed no loss of quality (I only shave once every 2-3 days). The cartridges fit perfectly on my old Gillette Sensor Excel grip (which has two pincers gripping the cartridge) so I didn't have to buy a new one. Each blade should last several months before you need to replace it (i.e. it starts pinching you). These Preserve blades are specially coated with titanium to extend blade life. Check out the story "Increasing the Life of Razor Blades" - it's easy; The main thing is to avoid oxidation (rust), which occurs when in contact with water. What I do: After shaving, I give the blade a quick rinse with lukewarm water to remove any soap and hair residue by tapping it on the sink a few times, then shake off the water and towel dry briefly. Warm water evaporates off a warm blade fairly quickly. Overall I think the Preserve Triple razor cartridges deserve 5/5 gold stars for product quality (I will update this if my blade doesn't last three months) and 5/5 green stars based on the social and environmental aspects. Production. Preserve deserves a lot of credit for creating a Gimme5 collection program (those white containers you find outside of Whole Foods) that takes your #5 plastic (like most yogurt boxes) and recycles the plastic into Preserve products. The box the blades come in is made from recycled cardboard. Recycling plastic saves a lot of water, energy and gas compared to making new plastic (and of course keeps plastic from ending up in landfills). Preserve do life cycle assessments of their products and seem interested in keeping plastic out of our landfills and oceans. I would love to know more about the business of the company but based on the information available Preserve is currently the best option I can find for disposable razor cartridges hence they deserve 5/5 green stars. Finally, Slate magazine published an article comparing the carbon footprint of disposable razors to that of an electric razor. Their conclusion is that the energy used to heat water is the biggest CO2 cost of shaving with disposable razors, and therefore electric razors win (but the CO2 cost isn't that high anyway). Your estimate doesn't account for material waste from broken electric razors, and landfill waste is arguably a bigger concern when comparing options. Disposable razors also make a big impression in landfills (2 billion disposable razors are thrown away in the US every year), so make sure your blades last as long as possible. I'm guessing using just 15 disposable blades over a 5 year period could result in a lower material cost than a single electric razor. Reducing the amount of hot water you use while shaving will have the greatest effect.
