DO NOT try to get them dirty at first. They don't pick up the stain well, it spreads too hard and too easily, and the wood pieces don't pick up the stain at all, leaving weird streaks - I think from the seams/wood glue. BUT! They take acrylic paint very well. I painted them all over, painted over the bad paint and turned them into pretty decorative signs (some with lots of paint, some with vinyl). They were perfect for this application when I realized coloring part of them was a waste of time. Would buy them again but never dye them. In the future I will have to get better quality boards for painting.
