Review on Excalibur Food Dehydrator 9-Tray Electric: Accurate Temperature Control for Faster, Efficient Drying (Black) by Andrew Vijayakumar

Revainrating 3 out of 5

What's with the horrible sound?

After years of dreaming about a food dehydrator and spending countless hours reading reviews of various brands and models, I finally settled on this one. I've used it 4 times already. First batch: all tomatoes, all 9 bowls are full. The second batch worked well: tomatoes, zucchini, beets. All 9 tar are filled. Worked fine again. By the third installment I started to wonder if this car was new or not! The third batch consisted of 5 trays of tomatoes, the remaining trays were empty and remained in the dehydrator (according to the instructions) for the drying time (approx. 9 hours). After 7 or 8 hours of drying I heard an awful noise coming from the dehydrator like the fan coming out of the machine! It was loud enough and so unsettling that I jumped in to save the car by turning it off and popping the lid. I waited a bit and turned it back on, this time there was less noise but just when it came to the return line I turned it off and left it off for the night. The next day I noticed that the temperature controller didn't look flush. it's a bit one sided. I'm not sure if that's what it looked like when I first got the car or if it was after I heard the noise. Fourth batch: 1 tray of cherry tomatoes, the rest was empty. The first 10 minutes was the same terrible noise! It sounded like a train was going through my house! I waited and the sound got a little better. It's been 25 minutes since I turned on the dehydrator and the fan still doesn't work. it sounds like an old car that needs scrapping, not a brand new car. I've read that Excalibur machines are very quiet. I wonder if there is something wrong with that? I certainly don't feel safe leaving this overnight to dehydrate any foods. I feel like I need to be with him all the time and I can't do it for 8-12 hours at a time! I would appreciate any feedback. Many Thanks
