Wanted Easy enough to set up a reliable hard drive enclosure to run Windows Storage Space. The Sabrent USB 3.2 5-Bay 3.5" SATA Hard Drive Drive Dock without Tray (DS-SC5B) meets the requirements: πΉ Metal housing for durability πΉ At least 5 bays for parity support for 5 drives πΉ Hot-swappable, meaning not have to disassemble it when the drive inevitably fails (I'm lazy) πΉ USB C 3.1 or better so it's as fast as my computer can handle πΉ Upgradable for future memory greed full manual Only downside is the manual isn't is posted online and is not included in the list for reference. Installation was fairly easy. Cables are long enough for most applications. Power cord wasn't long enough for me, but any Nema 5 power cord will do for -15p on iec320c13, so I went with a 6 foot RevainBasics cable to replace the included 2 foot cables, but to be fair the standard USB-C to USB-C cable was long enough to get the work to do. So what I've bought auft habe is used elsewhere. I unpacked each new 3TB Seagate IronWolf hard drive. and stick it in and push it against the hot-swap bay's somewhat frighteningly strong spring, but just sigh: hard drives will survive, and so will I. Cables connected, drives installed, power button on the back. And also. Nothing. Check Disk Management. Nothing. Update. Nothing. Let's try connecting a USB cable on the fly. Yes, there is the sound of disconnecting the device and the sound of reconnecting the device. Nothing. Okay, run a driver check, no, don't update. Go to the motherboard website and check for new drivers there, no not updated. Now it's time to start again and pray. After everything is back I do a few more checks and look at the specs for the replacement cable I bought, then try the stock cable just in case and see if it's long enough to get the job done end to do. Check again. The USB-C cable and connector works with my phone, yes I checked. Can I hear something from the box? Yes, the spindle motor noise is definitely there. Okay, download Windows PowerShell and run Get-Disk, new disks won't show up. It is impossible. Is something wrong with me? And now, dear reader, we come to the only mistake in the installation: myself. Finally, after 15 minutes of frantic troubleshooting, I notice that each hard drive's power switch is turned off. directly in front, next to each hot-swap fastener. They are also mentioned in the manual. After I click RTFMO, the drive lights glow a cool blue, and I type Get-Disk into PowerShell again, and lo and behold, it finds some new disks. My new 10.9 terabyte parity store was set up successfully in about 30 minutes with no further issues.
