Having turned off a breaker, AND checked the switch, before doing work on an overhead light and still getting a surprise ZAP!, I have to say I'm glad to have this tester. It was the the wrong breaker. It was one of those weird old-style-wired 3-way switches. Live and learn, but still alive! This tool can detect current through a wire through the insulation. That's cool! Good to check that before you cut it with wire cutters. It can also detect a hot lead - that's cool! No more having to use a screwdriver to see if there is a spark, thinking that that's a better choice than getting shocked. (The screwdriver approach is not a very safe way to test things, mind you!)This tool can also save your life - fortunately in my case I wasn't grounded and so the shock just got my finger. This is an important tool to have on hand if you ever work on your own home wiring. The tool is very easy to use, as well - though I did have to read the instructions to figure out how to turn on the included little mini-light.
