Review on Samsung 860 PRO 1TB 2.5 Inch SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (MZ-76P1T0BW) by Edwin White

Fastest real SATA SSD I've ever used, best reliability specs for peace of mind

I am very satisfied with this Samsung 860 Pro 1TB SATA SSD from Samsung. I've gotten a few to upgrade a client tower of 3.5" hard drives and breathed new life into system performance. I also took the opportunity to run some performance tests. It was good. I used Crystaldiskmark to evaluate hard drive performance. It tests with and without the command queue. Since all of the current operating systems I use (Windows 7 and above, Linux, and Mac) enable command queues by default, I'll focus on these results. The drive does an excellent job of reading/writing sequentially. I got about 558MB/s reading and about 512MB/s writing. Most SSDs are good for sequential read/write operations. For this drive, the difference is only about 10% between queued and dequeued. This 860 PRO drive performed better than many other drives with a random read speed of around 300 MB/s and a write speed of around 207 MB/s. Unqueued read speed was about 36 MB/s (almost 1/10 the queued speed!), and write speed was about 65 MB/s (about 1/3 the queued speed). The command queue is important for random access and allocates this disk for such use. The 2.5" SATA form factor works well with Dell 2.5" to 3.5" adapters that fit into existing drive cages, making it easy to replace a 3.5" drive. .An important factor for me and my customers is reliability. SSDs have come a long way since their introduction a few years ago. The Samsung Pro series has better reliability and higher recording performance than their EVO models. They are also slightly larger by the power of 2 and rounded to the nearest decimal. In summary, this Samsung 860 SSD is one of the fastest I've used, especially for random read/write with queue enabled. This disk was perfect for upgrading my client's system. The old mechanical drive is now decommissioned and their previously quite fast turret now just flies! With that score, I love these upgrade discs. Definitely 5 stars.
