Lost photos that can't be retaken

After inserting the SD card it was recognized and seemed to work until the next day I put some of the photos I had taken in the photo gallery and they were all damaged. It wouldn't be too bad but my grandson's pictures were at his birthday party and they couldn't be repeated. I tried saving apps from phone storage to a new SD card and they got corrupted too. I'm not sure if this was representative of the SD card in general or if I just got a bad one. much luck.
