Works best as intended in hardware

I would say I should have gone with a longer shaft. This model has a hard time getting through my barn door as it is built quite narrow. 2x4 on the rim, 1/2" OSB and 1x4 trim. That's about 4 1/2" of material and the latch just slides over the shank to work. Not a problem, but I was hoping to add a metal plate where the latch connects to the other door, but I don't have enough clear space for that unless I use thin sheet metal.
