We installed this PCIe adapter in a macpro4.1 that was flashed to macpro5.1 which itself has received firmware updates to allow for NVMe support. We then fitted a Samsung 960 EVO series (1TB PCIe NVMe - internal M.2 SSD, MZ-V6E1T0BW) into this PCIe adapter and it performs like a champ. We can hibernate the machine, restart it, whatever, and it just works. The attached screenshot shows the results of the Blackmagic Disk Speed test run in the background while downloading Catalina Beta 7. I think both numbers go above 1500 when no other operations are done. In the next few weeks we plan to add another SSD to this PCIe adapter. The SSD below is from a macbookpro10.1 (2012 15" Retina MacBook Pro) running in one of the macpro5.1's SATA bays, but it looks like this PCIe adapter will double the bandwidth of an old SSD can. More later.
