The ink really works. It was weird for me, but even a hint of it will speed up the process. After a day you can be sure that all traces of the pen are gone, so it's quite a lot of fun. My 3 and 5 year olds still love this book and I love that a 3 year old can doodle whatever he wants without ruining the book for the next person. My only problems are the chosen font. So far my five year old has been struggling with the little "K" because the font is very confusing and actually looks like an odd looking R to him. Reading is one thing, but for a handwritten book it's just awful. The actual K is fine in practice, but then everything else looks wonky. It lacks consistency and that's my only complaint other than that we really like it.
