Wow I've been struggling with the trunk button ever since the guard crew turned it into a sticky old falling apart mess. He pulled mine out of the cell phone repair kit with a plastic spatula, carefully disconnected the electrical cord and connected it to a new button (so as not to lose access to it). I then pressed the outside edge of the button to click it, followed by the inside edge (the reverse order didn't work for me at all, the outside edge didn't go in without scratching the paint). The button is less "rubber" which I like a lot better than the original.
