I use it over a small table for general lighting. I use the pull down or up function every time I use it. When I sit down to work, I lower it and then raise it so it doesn't get in the way or to light up the room in general. I ended up using a different lightbulb with a silver colored section so it wouldn't shine in my eyes when brought near me. It only has a steel wire lampshade, so you should take this into account when placing it or consider a different light bulb. The only thing I wish would be a longer cord so I can hang it higher on the wall and still stretch it far enough over my work area, an extra 4ft of cord would really make a difference.
