We are glad we read the reviews here and carefully inspected the panels for imperfections on arrival. One of the four panels ordered was returned due to a material defect and the replacement we ordered was fine. .There was a very strong "chemical" smell coming from the plates and the packaging materials/instructions were soaked with it. The weather was good so we left all the boxes and materials on the patio until we were sure the panels would work. We then wiped the panels down with a damp cloth, plugged them into an outlet and left them out over lunchtime. We then painted one side of two of them to match the walls they would go to (low VOC latex enamel paint, two coats). A roller designed for smooth surfaces worked best for this process. We then reconnected it to the exhaust outside. which only fits into the fasteners. He finished the edges with reflective tape and attached it to the wall with double sided tape before installing the panels. 1) This insulation reflects heat back into the room and helps prevent heat transfer through the wall behind the panels (exterior walls in our case). Once installed in this manner, the reflective insulation is not visible even from a side angle unless you are deliberately looking straight ahead at the panel. One of the heaters was still giving off that initial (but not as strong) smell when turned on, so for the first few days I just left it on and closed the (bathroom) door with the window broken and the fan running. Now the smell is much weaker and will hopefully get weaker with more use. Because of the smell, we are reluctant to install the other two panels in the bedrooms as planned. In the meantime, let's just wait and see if the outgassing on the first two stops entirely. We purchased LUX WIN100 plug-in thermostats for two units installed: (https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B000E7NYY8/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_35). These thermostats are easy to use, intuitive to program and work well. You plug the thermostat into an outlet and then the heater into the thermostat (the heater plug only has two pins). Try to make sure the heater is not too close to the thermostat sensor. As the panels are ideally mounted low on the wall and the inserts can be placed next to or under the heater depending on the installation, you may need to adjust the thermostat several times. until you figure out what temperature on the thermostat actually works/feels best in your particular installation scenario. I'm glad we bought them at the end of summer and were able to unpack and process them outside due to the smell. We could never be in the same house with them if they had to be inside with us in the early stages. Now that we've successfully installed two panels and are working on the thermostats I'll take some time and then update this review once it's been running for a while.
