They are well suited for the most obvious purpose of protecting the counter from hot food. I use them in my kitchen cabinets as cushions under pots and pans so they don't scratch the shelves or slide around when I'm spinning Lazy Susan. I also place them between nonstick pans so the bottom of one doesn't scratch the nonstick surface of the lower one.
