I am a very advanced home and private chef. For me, knives are like the personal tools of a professional mechanic. They are essential to almost all cooking activities, and I buy knives to "cook," not "to look at." I have some very expensive knives that are carefully cared for for more expensive purposes, but we have an RV and I don't particularly like carrying my valuable knives in an environment (camping) where they could potentially be lost or damaged. . . I needed a solution and this kit filled 99% of my need! Some reviews have spoken of disappointment that the knives came in a box rather than a block, but this is how the pros carry their knives when transporting them to different locations. Good packaging is essential. This set comes fairly well packaged, making transport and use a breeze. * All knives in the set are very ergonomic and comfortable to hold. * The balance is very good and frankly a surprise for a set with such an affordable price. I don't really care about aesthetics but they look good while maintaining performance rather than looks. almost ready for any culinary activity, although I did add a Mercer 9-inch flexible fillet knife to the set for those things that require that kind of flexibility, like butchering freshly caught fish. and the user when kept in the packaging.* These knives make me feel comfortable using them on the road in our RV, cooking indoors or outdoors without worrying about them getting damaged or dull. * I expect this set to last a long time as our main camping and travel set in our RV and for this use I prefer a sheath over a knife block. *I maintain these knives with a Chef's Choice electric knife sharpener and up to 15 degrees for light cutting and other uses, but a simple manual pull through a hand sharpener should do the trick for most cooks. Overall I'm very happy with this set and expect that with proper maintenance and care it will last indefinitely when cooking on the go. The price is excellent value for the set and in my opinion I easily give this set FIVE STARS considering the quality, price, performance and culinary applicability, along with my honest and heartfelt recommendation for most beginners - and advanced kitchens or how we use them on your travels.
