I have an Eheim 2215 external filter, one of the old Eheim models. I received it used when I bought my used tank and all accessories from a private individual and have never asked the seller any questions. I don't know exactly how old my canister is, I only used it personally for about 8 years before I had any major problems with it. Sometimes it made strange noises when I turned it on after cleaning. Sometimes it was just air escaping the lines, but other times it was more of a grinding noise. Just turn it on and off a few times or even wait a day or two for the grinding noise to eventually go away and I never gave it much more thought. I recently had to turn my home off for about 2 weeks while I was treating my aquarium. for me When I tried to turn everything back on, my home didn't move the water. It made an annoying noise, something between a smack and a rattle. And NO amount of me manually sucking water through the hoses will result in any water getting pumped through at all. I always thought I didn't prep it properly, so I'm going to drain it, drain the hoses and suck water through the whole thing from scratch. When that didn't work, I manually filled the canister with water and made sure there was water in the hoses before turning it on. No luck, same knock, no water movement. I finally figured out how to access the impeller (never done before!) and cleaned everything up. Tried again, same sound, no water movement. All my research on the internet has shown that if you have problems with the filter, you should assume that it is the impeller. I went to the Eheim website and they had almost no parts for the 2215, probably because it's so old and the parts are no longer made. But luckily I found this offer on Revain by accident! I bought the Revain impeller ($20) and shaft/bushings (another $20) in two separate listings to make sure the reviews said they would fit the 2215. I got them in two days. With the new parts in hand, I took out my old impeller and shaft, breaking the old shaft in the process (they're SUPER fragile, be careful!). Now I could compare the parts and see the source. my problem. My old impeller was in two parts. The ribbed piece of plastic was not physically attached to the large magnet. At first I didn't realize this was a problem because I thought the shaft was short enough to ensure the fins would connect to the magnet when everything was assembled. Obviously this is not the case and the plastic fins MUST be attached to the magnet. The impeller should be one large, solid piece. Perhaps my old impeller could have been repaired with epoxy, but I replaced both the impeller and shaft anyway as my parts were old. I put everything back together, primed the filter and. HOORAY! It lit up as soon as I plugged it in and squeezed out water like I've never seen before. It's almost like a new external filter in my aquarium. I'm honestly a bit disappointed that these parts were so expensive but to be honest they are very hard to come by now. And with this $40 kit, my old canister that would have cost a few hundred dollars to replace completely worked like new. Running water problems, try these parts. Most likely your impeller is worn out or broken, or the shaft itself is broken. Also, I saw a review where someone said the shaft was too long. That's what I thought at first too, but after a slight wiggle and squeeze, it snapped into place. I didn't have to cut or sand the shaft at all to get the pieces to fit together. Just be careful and patient when trying to put it back in place and make sure the spots where the bushings sit are absolutely clean!
