This is an odd beast compared to the rest of the RAM mount lineup. Ball clamps have the same durable, non-slip design; However, there is enough slack in many of the internal connections that the end result isn't the secure support I expect from a RAM mount (I used it for a dedicated cell phone mount). I agree with other reviewers that the discrete position for the pivot is an annoying limitation, as is the need to loosen the ball to the point where it's almost gone in order to pivot the pivot. I think looping the detents would be a good solution to both the limitation of discrete positioning and the need to loosen them a lot to make adjustments. In my opinion a much better solution is to use two short levers with a double bushing and a double ball in between. It's a bit more expensive, but significantly more adjustable, shorter, and much stronger. I used that. It's actually significantly longer than I expected (I haven't checked the specs).
