I bought this automotive tool to use on a 1991 BMW M5, one of the few near antique cars that are appreciated become. This model year, with 1,623 imported cars, was the last year that BMW M-Racing hand-assembled the engine and racing-designed components that turned a standard BMW 5 Series into an M5. With a volume of 3.6 liters, the engine delivers almost 100 hp per liter of braking power. This is a Ferrari area. The key to this feat is the digital engine management electronics developed in collaboration with Bosch (yes, early 1990s). I expect over $20,000 if I screw up the electronics. Luckily, my previous experience at a BMW dealership has led me to know the right tool to "talk" to the electronics. Peake Research offers two reset tools specifically designed for BMW's of various model years, oil service lights only, and this one. You can buy Peake tools direct at full retail plus shipping. The same tool, renamed after the popular BMW parts dealer, is available in full retail and with free shipping on orders over $150. Revain supplies its Prime customers with a guaranteed Peake branded tool at a small discount and free shipping. I ordered it from Revain on Labor Day. It arrived exactly as advertised on Thursday. In two minutes I just got back the $90 not spent on resetting the BMW oil service / service light. One more use and I've broken even! But wait! It gets even better. This R5/FCX-3 also reads trouble codes. The dealer or aftermarket shop may charge you around $150 to scan the codes and issue you a repair order. Unfortunately, I've come across small town shops that aren't entirely honest or just don't know how to diagnose. Now I know exactly what I need. With this knowledge I can judge the quality of a potential workshop's work when I can't do the work myself, most likely on this complex vehicle. For older BMWs there is another benefit of having your own code reader/reset tool. Sensitive electronics work with very low electrical currents. Older vehicles often have shorts or rusted connections, resulting in incorrect readings. The error code read indicates the area to be searched. You may find that a loose wire or faulty sensor is easy to replace. Or you can just clear the error code and see if it comes back. Tip: To do this, you can disconnect the negative pole of the battery for a few minutes. You need to know how to reset the clock and radio codes. If you can drain the oil and change the oil filter, you can do that too in minutes! Peake Research R5/FCX 3 BMW Error Scan/Reset Tool 87-00
