When my old OfficeJet 1410 died and my Canon MG5400 stopped communicating with my Chrome OS computers, I looked for a decent replacement. I was happy with the 1410 and knew HP had an app that would allow my Chromebox to bypass the cloud and print to the 1410 via the printer's USB port. The feedback on the HP 8610 is mostly positive. As some have noted, it's large but light enough to move around without risk of hernia. I was surprised that it's as big as the OfficeJet 1410 it replaces. I am one of those people who read manuals and the manual is not included. The documentation is limited to a double-sided sheet with a few drawings and a formally thicker grave, which mostly lists legal warranties in different languages. HP may require customers to read the user guide on the CD provided. The problem is that many computers, and all Apple computers, don't come with CD/DVD drives. HP didn't even warn customers about removing the internal packaging materials. A small two-page "introduction" revealed that the ink cartridges were spying on users. The "anonymous" data is stored in the memory chip built into the cartridges and is said to be read out during processing! HP indicated that this feature can be disabled, but could not find the suggested website that describes how to do this. A Google search found an HP webpage that suggests finding this setting in the settings on the front of the printer. I almost returned the printer when I discovered that HP uses their ink cartridges to collect customer information. During installation, the required URL to access and use the HP Officejet Pro 8610 Embedded Web Server. When I tried to use the scan-to-email feature, I was redirected to a "secure connection" followed by a Welcome message with a large red padlock icon and a superimposed X along with a "Your connection is not secure" warning. the ability to automatically report details of potential security incidents to Google's privacy policy. Another Google search found an HP forum that suggested ignoring this warning unless the connection is outside the local network! Thanks but no! The 8610 monitor works with a cable USB Chrome OS wired connection as well as Chrome Cloud printing. The print quality is the same as my old 1410. I plan to keep the printer but am a bit worried about privacy, security and poor documentation.
